How University Email Works
A university email system generally uses the university internet domain, plus ".edu". An email is assigned usually by a system of the student/professor/administrator's first and last name. However, don't be fooled into thinking that every university figures their domain the same way. For instance, the Universities of Montana and Maryland both use UMT.edu and UMD.edu respectively, but University of Michigan's domain is UMich.edu.
A university may assign emails based on a combination of first and last name. For instance, an email address for John L. Smith may be johnsmith, johnlsmith, jsmith, jlsmith, or a variety of other ways. It is not enough to simply know that a specific university uses first initial and last name, especially when there could be two or more students or faculty with the same name.

An university email directory may be the best chance of finding the email contact you need. You might start by looking up the university website. Most universities provide a directory to students, faculty, staff, and even department contacts. In many cases, there may be strict student privacy policies, and subsequently, you may not be able to search directly for a student. However, beginning with a university email directory is the best place to get started on finding the trail to your intended contact.
